I recently found these photos. They show the flight into Afghanistan. Not
exactly First Class. Mike would have been on a plane just like this.

This is what Mike probably looks like when calling home.

Base Castle in Khan Neshin, southern Afghanistan, Aug. 11, 2009.

This is 1st Platoon, Fox Co, 2/8 Marines taken around July 25. From the
London Times Online. I am guessing
Mike
is sleeping something like this.

U.S. Marines from the 2nd MEB, 1st Battalion 5th Marines sleep in their fighting holes inside a compound where they stayed for the night, in the Nawa district of Afghanistan's Helmand province, Wednesday July 8, 2009. (AP Photo/David Guttenfelder) Photo copied from Cryptome.org |
This is how Mike slept during the first two weeks. When they get to their AO the will build covered bunkers. In our phone call on July 17 Mike said that the Mortar men slept in the middle of the compound while the Bravo company guys slept near the wall.

pack filled with mortar equipment, ammunition, food, and water in the

This is probably what Mike looked like since he was also carrying mortar equipment.

Department of Defense photo (?) From Cryptome.org
Mike talked about needing help to stand up because they so much gear. Here is a photo taken as a mortar team was getting ready to board helicopters at the start of the operation.
